Your city’s culture needs you

One of Toronto’s few magazine shops, Presse Internationale, is shutting down after nearly two decades of operation. A new landlord bought the building and is increasing rent for that storefront from $7,000 to $11,000. It’s difficult news, and there are a lot of things to feel upset about.

What I think is missing from the narrative is what’s next. I imagined if Presse Internationale enlisted the help of someone like Happy David for Casa Magazines, and connected with its customers digitally while also bringing Toronto’s magazine scene together. The shopkeepers could find a place with lower rent and customers could follow along.

It turns out somebody did that already! Nicola Hamilton started Issues a few years back. If you love print magazines, the best thing you can do is vote with your dollars by supporting retailers like Issues today and buying a magazine from its impressive selection.

When you do this, you contribute to the optimism, energy, and business that the shopkeeper needs.

The next best thing you can do is tell other people about Issues and other alternatives. There is a smaller Presse Internationale on the east end. There is International News near St. Lawrence Market.

When you talk about print magazines, other people remember how much they love print too—and are encouraged to visit and shop.
