The timeline of change

A lot of change happens on its own timeline. You can push, pull, and prod at it, and yet rushing it is like honking your car’s horn in gridlock traffic. Most times it just takes the time it takes.

There are still many decisions in your control:

  • Initiating the change in the first place
  • Sticking with it
  • Identifying and completing tasks to move it forward
  • Introducing more people in to help
  • Deciding to prioritize something else

What’s not in your control is when the change is complete. In fact, change is never complete. Paul Valéry’s saying goes, “A work is never completed, a word which for them is meaningless, but abandoned.”
