In an ideal world, you’d be prepared for everything you want to participate in. That’s not realistic though. New opportunities pop up all the time.
It can feel tempting to want more time to prepare for all of it. What tends to happen is you don’t have energy to, or you’re not able to prioritize preparation. You either need to show up and participate, or sit out.
More often than not, participating creates more possibilities than sitting out.
If nothing else, participating creates an opportunity for you to practice improvising.
P.S., This is not a call to make a habit of showing up to important occasions unprepared.

I like this. Especially as something I’d like to teach my seven year old.
Thanks for writing, Clint. I wish I learned this in my childhood. (My parents tried, I’m sure!)
