There will be seasons where you need to keep options open, and others when you need to commit. My friend Jason wrote a provocative article about the latter.
When we recently caught up, I mentioned his article and I told him how I felt like I’d been juggling a lot of projects. I wondered out loud if I might’ve been keeping too many options open. While I’m not sure which project will work out yet, I am confident that something interesting will happen as long as I see them through.
Jason clarified for me that I was in an exploratory season of my career; perhaps it was good for me to explore more options right now. There are two things I took away:
It was an assuring reminder that I wasn’t ready to commit yet. Eventually, as the projects mature and I am in a position to commit, I will do so with a sense of balance.
If an article makes you feel confused, it’s helpful to reflect on it. It took a conversation for me, with the author himself, to get to the insight that I was in a season of exploration. It feels confusing to navigate between so many options, and I know things would happen faster if I’d focused. Still, the best move for me right now is to keep more options open, not fewer.
