Winning vs. not losing

There are two quotes I really liked from Shane Parrish’s Clear Thinking:

“While the rest of us are chasing victory, the best in the world know they must avoid losing before they can win. It turns out this is a surprisingly effective strategy.”

“If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you need to do is stop digging.”

Sometimes, if the clock is counting down, you need to buy more time before you can think about winning. Don’t put your own back against the wall, and burn the boats very sparingly.

It turns out it’s much easier to play to win when you’re in a position where you’re not losing. You have the time and clarity to lean into your strengths andplay to your advantage.
