Suspension of disbelief

Part of the magic of stories—RPGs, films, improvised comedy—is they require you to temporarily suspend disbelief. You need to put aside the heuristics that pop up in your mind that are incredibly useful for the real world, and be open to a new set of rules.

There’s a use for this in the physical world, too. It’s important to put aside the naysayers, the possible stumbling blocks and setbacks, and even sometimes permission and administration, and just to move forward.

The disbelief will, inevitably, catch up of course. You can only delay or distort reality for so long, and it often makes you pay with interest. Still, sometimes it’s better to pay the interest than to not have tried at all.
