Read the room

When you’re presenting online, one helpful way to think about voice, tone, and style is to consider its physical equivalent scenario. For example, let’s say you’re making a video that’s going on YouTube. What are you going to talk about, and how do you want to sound?

  • Are you at a water cooler with coworkers? Is your boss around?
  • Are you talking to your best friend? At their house or at a coffee shop? Are you venting to them at a bar?
  • Are you speaking at a keynote at a conference? How many people are there, and what’s the theme of the event?

When you change the metaphorical environment and audience, you can also fine tune the way you speak—how concise you need to be, the words you want to use, and the appropriate subject matter for the conversation.
