I was reading a post I wrote recently, and I realized that I’d actually excerpted the same quote twice. That was inevitable—I’ve written over 1,000 posts at this point—and it created an opening for me to explore why it continues to resonate throughout the years. I started reading each of the related posts as well. The timeline goes like this:
In 2022, I wrote about Eddie Huang’s quote here, about how you shouldn’t define your self-worth by your success.
In 2023, I wrote about creating a life outside of an art career. I also wrote about what I thought being a serious writer meant, and how loosening up my devotion to this pursuit actually helped.
Earlier this year, in 2025, I wrote about Eddie’s quote again, and reflected again on how success and happiness don’t go hand in hand. The posts feel very similar, and I didn’t realize I’d written about it already. I also have some new language to define the experience, such as, “The trance of ambition,” as well as new personal stories and experiences.
More recently, I also wrote about a new definition of a life’s task, and how your life’s circumstances will point you in the direction. The idea that your life’s task should be something you can do today—not something you can’t—was very refreshing.
If you’ve ever wanted to write more, and don’t know what to write about, writing every day is a great way to discover topics that are on your mind. I could probably compile these posts and other related ones into a short book at some point.
At the same time, this blog has very much been an exercise in writing myself into the person I wanted to become. Identifying a life’s calling—and carving the path to participate more—is clearly a topic that has been on my mind.
