When you write (or make videos, music, etc.) and rely on an algorithm or platform to distribute your work, you are also paying for it to do so.
You may not realize it during the good months, but in the bad months, you’ll start wondering where your earnings went.
The platform will always have a valid reason, of course—your work didn’t reach as many people, or it introduced a new policy, or it updated its algorithm—but that consequence is the same: your work doesn’t make as much money as you used to.
The solution is simple: you need to connect with your people directly (i.e., customers, readers, listeners, viewers, etc.), and learn how to get more people to discover your work. Don’t rely just on a handful of algorithms to get your work out there—learn how to do it yourself.
When you take responsibility for your own promotion and marketing, you also take responsibility for your own income and outcomes.
