For 99.99% of people who want to make things, making something good is the second most significant challenge.
Making anything at all is the most significant challenge. There are so many psychological factors that get in the way of the creative process, which prevent a person from making anything. Some statements include:
- “I don’t have enough time/energy/resources (to make something good).”
- “I’m not ready to go public with it yet.”
- “I don’t even know what I want to do.”
For this vast 99.99%—chances are you’re in it!—showing up is enough. Like Big Mike told me, “Put the paint on the canvas!” Or as Austin Kleon says, you find your voice by using it!
(I love the Big Mike quote. I’ve used it here, here, and here.)
