Writing at this blog is a good source of energy for the rest of my life. When I write this blog, I do better at the rest of the stuff—my work and business, my family, etc.
Sometimes, I want to promote my writing. I want to make a newsletter, more posts at LinkedIn or Medium, articles for Fast Company, etc. Those are the places where more people are paying attention.
These promotional activities are good for business, at the expense of my energy. I need to restore it by writing at the blog. This blog is the trunk of the tree, and the rest of the promotional activities are the branches.
And writing this blog takes time. I’ve fallen behind on publishing. I am still figuring out this balance. The best heuristic I’ve come to, so far, goes something like this:
I write and publish at my blog every day. When I have written 10 days worth of blog posts—in other words, I have 10 blog posts queued up, which will go live over the next 10 days—then I can spend some of my energy to promote my writing.
(I’m not sure if 10 is the right number yet. You get the idea though.)
