In order for someone to give you an answer, they need to understand your question. That doesn’t just mean they’ll listen to your question; they need to know what you’re asking them.
That’s why sometimes even with the most helpful of intentions, the answer is still, “It depends.” There are way too many facts they know they don’t know—and don’t know they don’t know—for them to give you a good answer.
Whether it’s through writing, or through dialogue, it takes the other person time and energy to provide you with a good answer. Sometimes, you even realize that you’re not asking the right question.
That’s why it depends.
