Essentials week: Don’t think to write, write to think

Since I started writing daily, I’ve now published over 700 blog posts. I wanted to highlight 7 posts this week, so I’ll choose one good post per day.

Most of these will be greatest hits—the most popular, discussed, shared, etc.—some may be a deep cut or a next step, or an excerpt from my book that was particularly resonant.

These posts are essential to my library, so I’ll call it essentials week at the blog. I’m doing it for two reasons:

  • I’ve often found many timeless posts from other blogs to be really relevant and great
  • I’m on my honeymoon!

So, without further ado, the first essential week post is Don’t think to write, write to think. Here’s an excerpt:

Writing is sketching: I’ve always loved the title of the book, Why Architects Still Draw; author Paolo Belardi makes the case that amidst more efficient, tech-driven, methods of putting plans together, drawing by hand is an integral part of the architect’s working process. The same goes for writing. Just put the words on the page; with enough words, something interesting will emerge.

Lots of discussion at Hacker News. A lot of readers have come in from Substack recently, I’m not sure where the specific post is though.
