Defining Winning

What does Winning mean to you?

This sounds like a simple question—get a higher score than the other person, the highest score in the world, etc.—until it’s not. What’s the highest score?

Depends on the game. Well, then what’s the game?

If the game is music, is it hip-hop or opera? If it’s hip-hop, who is Winning—Drake or Clipse?

Are we scoring by album sales, or critical reception? Or is it something else? Quality? Serving their audience?

Here’s an actionable prompt: define what Winning means, for you. More importantly, define what it doesn’t mean.

The company you work for may define Winning a certain way. If you give it some thought, you may realize that you don’t want your boss’s job, or even their boss’s job.

It’s fun to talk with your friends about each other’s Top Five favorite musicians. You are using scoreboards to discuss each other’s values, to better understand each other and yourselves.

You could consider this all day, and it can change because you will change.

Sometimes you can have a higher score than somebody else and lose. And sometimes even with the lower score, you are Winning.
