There have been many moments when I could have stopped writing at this blog every day.
For example, this year alone, I might’ve been several days behind on posts. I was determined not to fall behind during my trip to Asia, and I didn’t, but then I fell behind upon returning to Canada. What can I say, things got busy!
Discouragement isn’t the only feeling. Often, my mind suggests that I work on, “something more meaningful, like a book.” I now know better. Any book I work on is much richer for me having worked on this blog, because I generate ideas and energy here.
I don’t have an elegant solution to these distractions.
What’s useful for me is pretty straightforward: I just do it. I make time in the evening. I tap away on my phone when I’m waiting in line at the grocery store.
Because there is a blog post I need to write today (or even yesterday)—a liberating deadline for me to meet—I let go of being judgmental of all of my ideas. I just choose one, usually the one at the top of my list, and I write it up.
Often, when I press publish, I suddenly find two new ideas.
I used to ask successful people, “How do you do it?” And only now, having written every day for over a thousand days, do I have a better grasp of the answer.
